First time on skis: Tips for beginners

Jasná in the Low Tatras is without a doubt one of the finest places in Slovakia to start your skiing journey. Still, it is completely normal to feel a bit anxious before clicking into skis for the first time. Will I get the hang of it? Is it safe? What if I hold everyone else up?

At our SNOWFLAKE ACADEMY ski school, we believe your very first turns should be all about confidence, fun, and steady progress. That is why we specialize in one-on-one private ski lessons, which fast-track your learning curve and make you feel entirely secure. After all, the secret to success isn’t just great snow conditions and premium gear – it is having the right approach.

Why start your journey with SNOWFLAKE ACADEMY?

Choosing the right ski school matters. If you pick up bad habits at the beginning, they are incredibly hard to shake off later. Here is why we are the best choice for you:

  • One-on-one instruction (1:1): Our instructors focus entirely on you. One instructor, one student – ensuring maximum progress in minimum time.
  • Certified professionals: Our coaches hold international qualifications and bring years of experience in both ski technique and effective teaching methods.
  • Premium equipment: We don’t teach clients on outdated gear. You will have access to top-tier equipment from brands like Rossignol, Black Crows, and Burton, featuring models explicitly designed to be forgiving of beginner mistakes.
  • Based in Slovakia’s largest resort: Jasná offers wide, perfectly groomed blue slopes that provide the ideal setting for your first time on snow.

Where to make your first turns in Jasná

When looking at the Jasná trail map, search for the wide, gently sloping blue runs. The absolute best spots for beginners include:

  • Biela Púť (No. 13): An absolute classic and the perfect slope to get started. It is a gentle, wide-open meadow served by a modern chairlift, where nothing will catch you off guard.
  • Lúčky (No. 14): A highly popular blue run that is wide enough to let you practice big, slow turns without worrying about other skiers.
  • Traverz (No. 34c): Once you are feeling a bit more confident and want to head higher up, these connecting trails allow you to enjoy a longer run with a minimal incline.

Good to know: Avoid the southern side of Chopok during your first few days. Even though the views are breathtaking, the terrain there is often steeper and windier, which can unnecessarily complicate things for a beginner. Stick to the lower elevations of the northern side, where conditions are much more predictable and stable. (Source: jasna.sk)

Tailored lessons: From toddlers to seniors

We believe anyone can learn to ski with the right mentor by their side. That is why our programs are custom-tailored to suit every age group:

  1. Kids’ ski courses in Jasná: Children learn best through play. We create a safe, engaging environment where their first experience on the slopes feels like a grand adventure. Check out our dedicated article on how to teach a child to ski.
  2. Adult ski courses: We understand that adults carry a healthy respect for falling. Our programs are built on logic, patience, and boosting your self-confidence step by step. Feel free to read our guide on learning to ski as an adult.
  3. Skiing for seniors: We adapt both the pace and technique to make skiing about the pure joy of moving in the fresh mountain air, without putting unnecessary stress on your joints.

Trip preparation: What to take care of before you arrive

Getting ready for the slopes starts well before you get to the resort. If you want to make sure your first day isn’t your last, focus on these three things:

  • Physical conditioning: You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but having good core stability, leg strength, and baseline cardio will go a long way in helping you enjoy your lesson without waking up completely sore the next day.
  • The right mindset: Skiing is all about having fun. Show up with a positive attitude and realistic expectations. Tipping over is just part of the process – the main thing is to keep smiling.
  • Theory and slope safety: Before hitting the slopes, we will walk you through the FIS rules (the skiers’ highway code) and basic terminology so that you feel safe and confident around others.

Essential ski gear

The right setup is about much more than just skis and poles – it is the foundation of your comfort and safety. If your feet hurt or you are freezing, it is almost impossible to focus on technique.

Here is a checklist of the absolute essentials you will need on the slopes:

1. Ski boots

This is the single most critical piece of gear, which is why we have written a whole separate guide on how to choose ski boots. They are the steering wheel of your skis. Beginners should opt for softer models (with a lower flex index) that won’t pinch or hurt but still hold the foot securely. They should be buckled tight enough so your foot doesn’t slide around, though you should still be able to wiggle your toes slightly.

2. Skis and bindings

To start, pick shorter skis (roughly reaching up to your chin). The shorter they are, the easier they are to maneuver at slow speeds. If you are renting, our shop or service technicians will set the binding release tension precisely to your weight so they click off safely if you fall.

3. Ski poles

Poles act as your stabilizers, helping you maintain rhythm and balance through your turns. To find the right length, flip the pole upside down and grab it right under the basket – your elbow should form a perfect 90-degree angle.

4. Helmets

You aren’t alone on the mountain, making a helmet an absolute non-negotiable safety standard these days. It protects you not just from your own spills, but from other people’s mistakes. It should sit snugly on your head even before you fasten the chin strap.

5. Ski goggles

A good pair of goggles won’t fog up and will enhance contrast, helping you spot flat light, ice patches, or bumps early on. They shield your eyes from snow, wind, and harsh high-altitude sunlight.

Naturally, you will also want functional clothing based on layering – starting with a moisture-wicking base layer, followed by a warm fleece mid-layer, and topped with a waterproof ski jacket and pants. You can learn more about layering in our dedicated article.

If you don’t own any gear, the easiest and most practical solution is our Snowflake Academy rental shohttps://snowflake.academy/rental/p, where we will gladly get you fitted with the perfect setup.

Choosing the right beginner skis

For those just starting out, we highly recommend skis that are highly maneuverable and forgiving – such as models from the Rossignol Experience collection, which are readily available in our rental fleet.

Being shorter and softer means they initiate turns with minimal effort. They don’t require immense leg strength and let you steer easily even at walking pace. Plus, their construction dampens vibrations from uneven snow, stabilizing your stance and giving you that much-needed boost of confidence.

What you will master in your first lesson

With proper coaching, you will pick up the basics faster than you ever expected. Our private lessons guide you step by step from zero to your very first independent run:

  1. The snowplow (pizza wedge): This foundational technique is your ultimate braking system, ensuring you always keep your speed completely under control.
  2. Your first linked turns: We will teach you how to shift your weight smoothly so turning feels natural and effortless.
  3. Stopping safely: Being able to stop whenever and wherever you need to is the ultimate confidence booster. You will master edge control and weight distribution to bring yourself to a halt even on slightly steeper pitches.
  4. Pole plants: Mastering the proper grip and timing to help you stay perfectly balanced through every turn.

So, are you ready to click into your bindings and experience the thrill of your first ski run? Just take the first step – we will take care of the rest.
